A Modern Approach to Emergency Readiness and Response in Healthcare.
Resilient and Ready has introduced a fresh and forward-thinking approach to managing emergency events within healthcare environments. Traditionally in the UK, healthcare sites and workplaces have relied on designated Fire Marshals or Fire Wardens to fulfil critical safety roles. These roles can typically include:
Fire Prevention – Routine Safety Checks – Training and Awareness – Record Keeping – Fire Risk Assessment – Evacuation Management – Communication During Emergencies – Fire Control – Accountability for Staff and Patients.
In addition to these responsibilities, healthcare organisations and their senior managers are legally required to ensure their sites are prepared to respond safely and effectively to emergency situations. However, the reality in many healthcare settings is that these responsibilities are often fragmented and distributed across multiple staff members, leading to potential gaps in preparedness, response and responsibility.
Resilient and Ready believes there is a better way.
We advocate for a more integrated and inclusive approach—one where all staff and managers are equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and tools to understand and respond to any emergency event, not just fires. Whether the threat is fire, flood, power failure, or another critical incident, every team member should be empowered to protect its residents, the site, visitors and themselves.
The required and statutory roles will simply be embedded into a wider remit that includes other types of emergency and crisis events.
The new structure and roles we train against are :
Organisational Crisis leadership (Crisis Management Team)
At Homes:
Fire & Emergency Manager (The Responsible Person, Site leaders’ roles in pre-planning, compliance and Business Continuity)
EMERGENCY COORDINATOR (Leads the site level response to emergencies)
EMERGENCY RESPONDERS (Part of the site emergency response team)
Basic Fire safety and awareness training (as requires for ALL staff members) remains in place but will be enhanced to inform them of the ‘Emergency response’ structure and individual roles and functions.
